Have you completed the basic module of the dental surgery assistant programme, but not yet entered into an agreement on an internship?
Then you have the opportunity to continue your course of study as a trainee in the practical training centre. The practical training centre was launched with two purposes:
Being a trainee at the practical training centre is often referred to as being in school-based practical training. As a practical training trainee, your daily work will focus on both your search for an internship and on the development of your professional and personal competences.
Once you have completed basic module 2 of the dental surgery assistant programme, you can apply for admission as a trainee in the practical training centre. You can be admitted if you at the time of admission meet the Danish EMMA criteria. EMMA stands for:
The school at which you took the basic module assesses whether you have the aptitude to continue the programme with a satisfactory outcome and whether they think you would subsequently be suited for working in the labour market within the subject. The school assesses your aptitude based on their overall knowledge of your professional, academic and personal competences.
Som elev i praktikcentret skal du være parat til at sige ja tak til en praktikplads, også selvom det kan medføre flytning eller lang transporttid.
As a trainee in the practical training centre, if offered you must accept a reasonable internship within another study programme than the one you primarily desire.
As a trainee in the practical training centre, you must be actively looking for an internship. Actively looking means that you must have a visible profile at www.praktikpladsen.dk, and that you are applying for all vacant internships within the subject area.
You are assessed on the basis of the EMMA criteria when applying for admission to the practical training centre. The EMMA criteria are applicable throughout the period where you are part of the practical training centre. The practical training centre is obliged to regularly assess whether you continue to meet the requirements. In this assessment, emphasis is placed on whether you have a satisfactory outcome of the practical training and your approach in relation to working at a dental clinic, including whether you comply with the work schedules and agreements.
If you are deemed not to meet the EMMA criteria, there is a risk that you will be withdrawn from the practical training centre. Once you are withdrawn from the practical training centre, you cannot be readmitted again.
As a new trainee in the practical training centre, you take part in a short introductory course focusing on giving you an insight into the rules for trainees at the practical training centre, getting to know the building, its staff and meeting the other trainees, as well as finding help for your internship applications. The introductory course also includes professional content in order to refresh your knowledge from the basic module regarding hygiene etc. During the initial 1-2 weeks, you will also meet with your head of degree programme, who will be your contact for as long as you are affiliated with the centre. It is important for your well-being and development as a trainee in school-based practical training that you inform your head of degree programme if any special circumstances apply to you and if this may be of significance for your studies. The better your head of degree programme knows you, the better he or she can support you in your studies. After the introductory course, you are aware of the expectations made of you as a school-based practical trainee and you know what use you can make of the practical training centre. Moreover, you are now ready to begin the practical training section of your study programme.
The daily activities for trainees affiliated with the practical training centre mainly comprise practical training within the subject, both at companies and in the sections at the Department of Dentistry and Oral Health.
As a trainee in school-based practical training, you will be part of one or more shorter practical training placements within the industry. These short practical training placements may vary in length and have different conditions depending on whether they are sub-agreements or an internship at the company (abbreviated as VFP in Danish). All the practical training placements have a common element: that they have come about following an enquiry to the practical training centre from a company that wishes to find a trainee, or from the practical training centre’s own proactive work to find trainee positions, or your own applications to dental clinics.
Before the first day of your internship, you make an agreement with your head of degree programme in dialogue with the clinic about which goals for your internship you should focus on during your time there. The practical training centre will remain in contact with you and the clinic during the internship with a view to providing the best possible support for your learning. This contact will focus on your professional development and on your work within the selected internship goals. If challenges arise in the collaboration between you and the clinic, the practical training centre will also help to find a way to solve these challenges and ensure an improved collaboration.
In the periods where it is not possible to offer you an internship in a company, you will take part in the work of the sections at Department of Dentistry and Oral Health. You will collaborate with odontology students, students of dental hygiene and the staff at the clinic, among others. This will include taking care of the day's tasks such as e.g. opening and readying the clinic in the morning, booking patient treatments, assisting during treatments, sterilisation and cleaning the clinic at the end of day. During your work and collaboration with the others at the department you will receive support and supervision from the internship instructor. The internship instructors are trained dental surgery assistants and part of the permanent staff at the various sections at Department of Dentistry and Oral Health. The internship goals for your study programme are the focal point of the feedback you receive from the internship instructors.
As a trainee in school-based practical training, you follow the main programme’s school periods as planned. To obtain the greatest possible outcome of the periods in school, you will be offered targeted activities at the practical training centre in the weeks leading up to the main programme. Focus here is on the academic areas that the individual main programmes deal with.
The few trainees who remain affiliated with the practical training centre when it is time for the final school exam will similarly receive specific help to prepare for the exam.
The internship instructors will support you in your practical training and give you feedback on your efforts. They will also have a dialogue with you about your outcomes, for example based on an evaluation. When you are in an internship in a company, the staff here also have responsibility for supporting you in your learning and providing constructive feedback on your work.
The practical training centre has the overall responsibility for ensuring coherence in your education. Your head of degree programme receives feedback from the internship instructors and the companies offering internships and based on this, you and your head of degree programme discuss your professional and personal development in relation to the internship goals described in the study programme.
The practical training centre also has an obligation to assess whether you still meet the above-mentioned EMMA criteria every third month as a minimum. Your head of degree programme is the person who carries out this ongoing assessment, which is called an overall assessment.
The working hours are 37 hours per week, typically between the hours of 08:00-15:30, though 8:00-14:00 on Fridays. The weekly working hours include time for you to look for an internship.
Once you are assigned school-based practical training, you will receive practical training payment according to the applicable Finance Act.
