The laboratory dental technician works at a dental laboratory and manufactures crowns, bridges and dentures. The programme is a vocational education and training programme which alternates between time at the school and internships at a dental laboratory. The school offers the programme's basic module. The main programme takes place at the Dental Technician School in Copenhagen. The training programme comprises concentrated materials science, technical work processes and laboratory work.
The laboratory dental technician must have dexterity, overview, the ability to concentrate, a sense of shape and good colour vision.
The laboratory dental technician can be employed at a dental laboratory, a clinical dental technician, in municipal dental services or at a dentist. The laboratory dental technician may also choose to open his or her own dental laboratory.
Being able to smile and chew is quality of life
As a laboratory dental technician, you manufacture crowns, bridges and dentures for patients who have either broken a tooth or who wholly or partly have teeth missing. Your job is to manufacture dental replacements so that the patient has better opportunities to talk, chew – and not least smile. In short, your work deals with helping to improve the patient's life and well-being.
A sure hand
Manufacturing crowns, bridges and dentures is precision work. You must therefore have a good deal of manual dexterity, the ability to concentrate, patience and diligence. And you must know when your work is one hundred per cent okay.
Technical understanding
Working as a laboratory dental technician requires a high degree of technical understanding. You very rarely meet the patients you are making dental replacements for. It is therefore important that you are able to follow models and written guidelines in your work. At the laboratory, you receive a dental impression of the patient’s mouth which the dentist has taken. Based on the impression, you first make a model in plaster and then manufacturer the crown, bridge or dentures based on the model. You work with the help of hand tools, specialist moulding, drilling and polishing tools, as well as a range of other tools.
Knowledge of materials
The laboratory dental technician uses different materials in the manufacture of dental replacements. This can include e.g. synthetic materials, porcelain or different types of metal, such as gold and other precious metals. This means that you need to have thorough knowledge of the various materials and their properties. At the same time, you must be able to use different techniques depending on the material you are working with.
A good eye
Manufacturing crowns, bridges and dentures is not only a skill. It also requires artistic abilities such as a sense of shape and good colour vision for the final result of the work to end as a well-functioning replacement for the natural teeth.
Calm yet busy
The laboratory dental technician’s working day is often busy. The dental laboratories receive many orders and all work should preferably be carried out straight away. You therefore need to be good at planning your work and able to work under time pressure, without compromising the quality of your work. You need to have the ability to be calm and careful, even though the working environment is hectic.

As a laboratory dental technician, you can be employed at a dental laboratory, clinical dental technicians, in municipal dental services or at a dentist. You can also choose to open your own dental laboratory.
